Hello Everyone!

I hope everyone is doing well.  I just came across an article in The New York Times today and had to share a part of it, because once again, a good reason to practice Yoga.

“You put four to six times your body weight through your feet when you walk,” said Courtney Conley, the founder of Gait Happens, a Colorado-based online education resource focused on foot health. “And 11 times your body weight when you run.”

These muscles within the foot, known as the foot core, are activated when we walk barefoot but become dormant and weak when we wear narrow, cushioned footwear, Dr. Conley said.

Over time, a weak foot core alters your gait and can lead to falls and injuries, such as shin splints…” (end of The New York Times article).

It might be one of the last things you think about when you think of practicing Yoga, but the  strength we gain in our feet is incredible!  When I was in my 20’s I thought I had a broken bone in my foot (bunions were already developing; passed down through the genes, not pointed high heeled shoes).  I was told that I would soon develop bone spurs and should get some orthodics to put in my shoes right away.  Well, who had that kind of money just getting out of college?  Insurance what?  So, I just dealt with the increasing pain and hoped it would go away.  Several years later, Yoga was introduced to me by my now husband, Vinny.  Thank you forever for that :).  “Setting the 4 corners of your foundation” over and over:  Mindfully lifting your toes and attempting to individually place the big toe down, pinky toe down and then all the other toes in between.  Building the standing Yoga poses, such as Warrior I and II from the feet up a lifting the arches of your feet up by just thinking about doing that.  I could go on and on, but the bottom line is…  I rarely ever complain about my feet hurting.  Before Yoga, I was reminded by the pain on a daily basis.

We call it a Yoga practice, because in order to see change, one must work mindfully and consistently.  That is what practice is and it is worth it on so many levels.

I will be sending out information in a day or two about the new Series starting the week of August 12th (next Monday).  The class schedule:  days/times will remain the same, but there will be a couple of classes later in September that we will miss due to an upcoming musical theatre show I will be participating in (details later on) :).
